German Assault in the East - Germans vs Russians

Our Friday night game group met up recently for a big game of Bolt Action.  Each side had between 25 and 30 units.  The forces included not just a large number of infantry, but also several tanks.  The German force was made up of regulars and veterans, while the Soviet force was predominately inexperienced, but dug in.  Because of the large numbers of troops, we played on a 5' by 8' table.

I, Old Man Morin, am a tank lover. I always have been.  As a child I used to walk around military bases and was astonished by the size and noise of them.  I guess I never really outgrew that awe. One of my favorites has always been the Tiger I. It is iconic, it is HUGE (for its time), AND it has a MASSIVE GUN!!! What’s not to love? Well, Bolt Action is an infantry based game…  And it is a GREAT BIG TANK!

Disposable Heroes: French army project (Part 1)

Hey guys, Bryan here and I don't feel well. For the last few months I've been feverish with a disease that many of us suffer from here in Bolt Action land. In fact, unless you're the ultra-disciplined Dave 'o War himself, I know you've had it to. NPF - 'New Project Frenzy', that's the official scientific term. Experts believe that you are at your most vulnerable to NPF as you 'finish' your current army with the exception of a few straggling units you've run out of motivation to paint. This is when it begins, something new and shiny catches your eye, and before you know it there're folders full of inspiring pics, army lists written and your Mrs is asking tough questions about all the boxes of new miniatures covering your work desk.

Scratch Built Tank Obstacle Review

Today I've got a review on some amazing pieces of anti-tank scatter terrain I purchased from forum member, Dano903 - not to be confused with the sultry Dano of the BAR & Speakeasy!  He has a terrain building thread in the Bolt Action Modeling section.  I purchased twenty Hedgehogs with two different types of basing, two tetrahedron, and five wooden-stake anti-landing craft style obstacles for a very low price.
The entire haul minus Dano903's Soviets for scale.

Hobby: 28mm Soviet's in Body Armor

During the War the Soviet Union experimented with various types of body armor to help protect soldiers in combat.  The SN-42 body armor was widely produced and supplied to tank riders and assault troops.  SN stands for "Stalnoi Nagrudnik" or Steal Breast Plate.  SN-42 body armor consisted of two pieces of steel plate which covered the wearer's chest and groin.   SN-42 weighed about 8lbs and was 3mm thick, giving the solider wearing it protection from 9mm pistol ammunition fired from German submachine guns.

AAR: Red Lighting Soviets vs Germans

My buddy Andy and I got in a game recently.  This was Andy's second game of Bolt Action where he built an army as opposed to me bringing an army for him.  Andy tried out some new things, while I gave my Soviet cavalry a second go.  In my first outing with the Soviet cavalry, they got  slaughtered. I ran one large unit of nine cavalry.  I did this because I expected them to take casualties and wanted the unit to be able to bleed.  Andy hit the cavalry while they rode across a field with his StuH 42 and killed every single one of them.  It was a sad day. (Time to give them another go - that's Bolt Action, baby. - J)

Dismounted Soviet Cavalry

The down side to painting mounted Soviet Cavalry was that I "had" to paint dismounted figures. The upside of painting mounted figures is I "got" to paint dismounted figures.  Anyone who has ever painted motorcycle troops or other cavalry knows there is both pain and joy in collecting mounted troops. Yes painting and having extra dismounted figures can be annoying, but it is worth it in the end to have proper models for when your troops dismount. True, you don't have to paint dismounted figures and can use regular infantry, but having matching dismounted figures really makes an army stand out.

Bolt Action Radio Episode 23

On behalf of the original BARbarians, Dano and Judson, welcome back for another episode of Bolt Action Radio! In this show, the not-so-gentle men get back to basics and turn this into a shop talk marathon. In fact, the shop runs on so late into the night - and the cups - that the second half is going to appear on Speakeasy 23. Before it's cut short, however, D and J talk about recent Warlord Games releases and may or may not admit to surprising sensitivity to some of the period subject matter. Certain journeys to Australia and Oneonta and the tournaments that occurred there are mentioned, as well as the surprising results breaking out from your normal list-making habits can often yield. Before long, this one starts to get a bit loose, and the FCC (not really) pulls the plug, forcing us to the high numbers on your TV dial (Speakeasy!) The important points are made before the rollercoaster takes its final downhill plunge into Speakeasy territory, but hold on to your hats regardless. 23 is on the spicy side!

Dropping into Darkness - Looking at Night Fighting Rules and Para Drops

In the lead up to D-Day the crew were chatting about getting some games going to simulate the various elements of the invasion, I grabbed hold of the idea of a night time Airborne assault and started to plan how it would work. The two elements I had to consider were the night fighting rules and how to simulate a para drop. Now Warlord Games has put out a night fighting set of rules so that part was easy enough, but simulating the randomness of a parachute landing was left up to us to work out.

Continuing the discussion from Bolt Action Radio 23, Dano Without Robots and Judson With Three D's attack the show with spirit-induced vigor; but things meander as the guys talk shop like the microphones weren't on. Oh, and they get a little wild as well, in case the abrupt ending of BAR Episode 23 wasn't an obvious enough clue.

As a nod to the upcoming D-Day anniversary the team at BoltAction.net have been chatting about scenarios and my crew in Newcastle, Australia played out a night time US Airborne parachute landing in Normandy. I have spoken in a previous article about the Warlord rules regarding night time battles and the house rules to simulate a parachute landing, so now it was time to see how it would work in practice.

$26 Soviet Airborne Army

Wargames Factory is a plastic model company that makes a variety of figures for a variety of eras. Wargames Factory multi-part plastic figure sets include historical, moderns, zombie, sci-fi, and fantasy. Wargames Factory figures are inexpensive and range in quality from poor to good. Wargames Factory’s first model kits were fairly poor in quality, but their newer kits are much better. As the company has grown over the last few years there has been a noticeable improvement in the quality of their model kits. Wargames Factory also makes models kits in both 28mm and 15mm scale.

28mm Soviet Cossacks

After successfully building Soviet Cavalry using Perry’s ACW Cavalry and Warlord Plastic Soviets, I decided to attempt to make a unit of Cossacks as well.  I followed the same steps when building my Cossacks as I did for my regular Soviet cavalry. The only difference was the types of heads I used. Instead of helmeted Soviet heads, I used the Soviet heads with fur caps found in the Warlord set. Before gluing the heads in place I cut the ear flaps off the top of the head so that the fur cap was flat to form the crest of the Cossack hat. This allowed me to paint on the Cossack crest and cross. The plastic set from Warlord only has ten heads with fur caps, making it two short of the twelve needed to match the Perry set. Lucky for me I have bought four sets of Warlord Plastics over the last year and saved the left over bits each time. Since most the previous figures I built had helmets, I had plenty of left over heads with fur caps. I had so many extra fur hat heads that I will be able to build a sufficient number of dismounted Cossacks with the remaining plastic bodies. This is a good example of why you should always save all of your bits.

Hey guys, Bryan here with a guide to the miniatures I used for my French Foreign Legion units. As I mentioned in the first installment of my army project series these tough fighting rogues will be making up half of my French Colonial army, so I needed some suitable miniatures. Understandably there are a few companies out there making miniatures of this famous fighting force. Here is a quick guide to whats around. and how to convert those Bolt Action units not currently available
