It's was some 6 months ago that I posted the last update on my French colonial army project. Since then this fledgling force has grown into a 1250pt army, with many added units. The heart of the army is based around the infamous French Foreign Legion, but includes many other units from France's colonies to create a really fun and exotic force to chuck dice with. I'll take you on a quick tour and give a few insights into how it has been playing in recent games.

A Review of Rubicon's Plastic Tiger One

Hey Gang,

As players of Bolt Action we are literally spoiled for choice when it comes to quality model kits, especially when it comes to vehicles. I personally generally lean towards the faster to assemble nature of resin kits. I have run into the products of another company that changed the way I view the alternative, plastics. Rubicon Miniatures.

Bolt Action Radio 33 kicks off with Judson hosting two special guests at the BAR. The jet setter Anfernee manages to pause his international travels long enough for a segment, and MarkDawg of BAR and LRDG fame (or infamy) drops in to make his BAR debut. As the only three patrons of The BAR they have plenty of time to talk about preparing to run or participate in a Bolt Action Dot Net Format event in the first segment. They then all depart for a quick break, and through the mysteries of recording science come back to discuss the lessons learned at two different Format events, both as a player and as an organizer.

New Unit: Soviet Blocking Detachment

During the German summer offensive in 1942 Soviet leader Joseph Stalin issued Order 227. The order was as known as the “Not one step back” order. No Soviet commander was allowed to retreat under the order without expression permission to do so. Anyone who disobeyed Order 227 was subject to disciplinary action which could include anything from death to reassignment to a penal battalion. Order 227 also instructed armies to created block detachments who were instructed to shoot any troops fleeing from the front. This was not the first time blocking troops had been used by the Red Army. Order 1919, issued by Stalin in 1941, instructed the Stavka to create blocking detachments as well. These blocking detachments were under the direct control of the NKVD.

Recently, Nemesis Andy was given the opportunity to review Rubicon’s 28mm scale T-34/76 plastic tank model.  Anyone that is familiar with Rubicon’s tank kits is well aware of the wealth of modeling versatility that comes in each kit and the T-34/76 kit is no exception.  Once you get the sprues out of the box you can’t help but notice all the cool little extras added to enable you to personalize your T-34.  From different turret options, to both steel and rubber track wheels.

How to Paint White Wash The Old Man Morin Way

Welcome back gang,

Old Man Morin here with a look at how I paint dirty, warn Winter War tanks. Now if you missed it earlier, Judson also wrote an article a few weeks back on the same topic though his methods are very different from mine. You can find his great article here.

Now as many of you know I have been chipping away at a Finn army for quite some time now. My newest addition is the formidable (on the Bolt Action table anyway) BT-42. Trenchworx makes an excellent kit for this tank. Up until recently it was 3D printed and was pricey BUT rejoice!!! It is now out in resin, for a fraction of the cost. The model I am painting today is the 3D printed one (I couldn't help myself) but I look forward to seeing the resin kit in person (I have one in the mail).

Dealing with Failure after a Tournament

When I first starting playing Bolt Action amongst my group of buddies I had an excellent win/loss ratio.  My three infantry squads would do amazing things against my opponents three infantry squads, all of course laden with LMG’s, AT grenades and any other options we could possibly fit. Our expensive medium/heavy tanks would roll around taking pot shots at each other while our best anti-tank armoured cars would look for that sneaky shot against the tanks side armour. We were kings of our own garage with our 7-8 order dice armies and we loved it.

Alternate Bolt Action Missions #1: "NUTS"

We at Boltaction.net love the rulebook missions provided with Bolt Action. We also love the new mission included in the Tank Wars book. As tournament player we are often looking for fair and balanced missions to use in events or to use in friendly games.

Every Friday for the month of March we will be publishing a mission for you gaming pleasure. Please let us know if you enjoy the missions and please suggest any changes that you think might make them better. We do ask that you play these missions first though.

Mission number one is named after one of our favourite WW2 quotes:

The battle has raged on for days and your supplies are starting to dwindle. Just when things are starting to look grim you hear the drone of a plane. The needed supplies are dropped but unfortunately for you they land in no man’s land. Your soldiers race to collect the needed provisions and ammunition. Enemy troops have the same idea.

Speakeasy Podcast Episode 33

Judson and Dano are back for Speakeasy 33 and boy, are their thumbs blistered! They fly out of the gates with some Bolt Action / Nintendo metaphor and the up-up-down-down-left-righting is on full display. After that, the two talk a bit about their recent efforts in writing lists for an upcoming Early War tournament as well as seven yard go routes and the Raiders' own Bo Jackson.

Hut-hut-hut-have a listen!

(For those that don't know, subscriptions provide access to all WWPD premium content, and Speakeasy represents just a fraction of the whole. - Judson)

Mad Bob Miniatures - Katyusha

FINALLY!!!  After nearly three years of playing Bolt Action all us Russofiles finally get the Katyusha we deserve.  A special thank you to Bob Emerson, form Mad Bob Miniatures, who added it to his Hungarian Kickstarter a few months back.  Prior to the Kickstarter Bob had been cranking out specialty vehicles and rare artillery pieces you couldn't find anywhere else.  I was not disappointed in my past purchases or interactions with Bob.  His models are crisp, clean, and easy to assemble.  So when I heard he was making a Katyusha I could not pass up on the opportunity.

A solitary is tasked with carrying important captured intelligence about the enemies forces to command. Along the way it has taken fire and is slowly going down over no man's land. Both sides rush to grab what is left, though no one is exactly sure where it will actually land.

Set-up:

Both players roll a die. The highest scorer picks a table side.

No units are set up on the table at the start of the game. Both sides must nominate at least of their force to form their first wave. This can be the entire first wave if desired. Any units not included in the first wave are left in reserve (See reserves on page 199 on the rulebook).

Tournament Players

Time to stop the online "flame war" gang!
Howdy Gang,

I can’t help but notice that the term “Tournament Player” has been bantered around on certain Facebook groups lately as a dirty word. As a diehard tournament player I have to say that I find this both surprising and a tad annoyingly misleading. I think a few people might be using terminology incorrectly. Today I aim to bust out the dictionary and, I hope, to clarify a few things about the sometimes elusive and often maligned tournament player.

Alternate Bolt Action Mission #3: Heartbreak Ridge

War is often a macabre game of capturing areas of "strategic" importance without loosing any ground yourself. Battles over these points on a map often come into being depending where armies happen to be in relationship to one another. As dawn breaks, your commanding officer sends the order to move out.  It is time for the grim game of war to begin once again.

Set-Up:
This mission uses 3, 40mm objectives.

One objective is placed in the centre of the table. Then, using this centre point, the board is divided into 4 equal sized quarters.

Desert war AAR

Welcome to the scorching desert of North Africa Bolt Action fans! Recently the LRDG podcast crew got together for a big group game. The 4 of us each fielded a 1250pt army each, so 2500 pts a side! We loosely based the game around the second battle of El Alamein in late 1942, with this sector seeing the Allies (Free French and Australians) taking on the Italian defenders. The result to was too good not to share.
